Joy and Jake shared a *joy*ful and moody April wedding at David’s Country Inn in Hackettstown, New Jersey. Not to beat a dead horse with that joke, but it REALLY was a joy. This couple is playful, fun and they don’t take themselves to seriously – which we learned during their Spring engagement session the previous year. These two are both nurses who just love craft beer and playing board games. They don’t need anything fancy, just each other.
Their wedding was a delightful fusion of tradition and modernity, set against the backdrop of a historical and unique venue that perfectly encapsulated their non-traditional vibe.
From the start of their wedding day at David’s Country Inn, it was evident that Joy and Jake’s wedding would be nothing short of a good time. The Warren Suites, where they both got ready, buzzed with excitement. Joy, adorned in a dramatic old Hollywood black robe, radiated elegance and confidence. Black, her happy color, symbolized her unique sense of style and individuality.
The couple’s Earthy vibe shone through in every aspect of their wedding, from the choice of venue to the meticulously curated details. Inspired by their love for National Parks, each table was named after a different park, adding a personal touch to the decor. A color scheme of white and deep red flowers, coupled with forest greenery, adorned the venue, creating a rustic yet romantic atmosphere. We held their first look on the porch under the classic David’s sign. Additionally, we used the couple’s favorite spots for portrait back drops such as the ivy wall, courtyard and interior stained glass and antique bar.
Despite the looming threat of an April shower, Joy and Jake remained undeterred in their quest for the perfect day. The weather held up and the clouds provided us with moody, diffused lighting. Which is what any photographer hopes for. We were nearly finished with outdoor portraits, and just as we were on the last shots of the bridesmaids, an abrupt hailstorm swept through the grounds, unleashing golf ball-sized hailstones. However, the fierce storm was fleeting, and soon gave way to clear skies. In a stroke of luck, no one was harmed in the making of these bridesmaids photos, but there was a roaring crack of thunder while we hilariously all screamed and ran inside. This made for some memorable candid photos. The remaining photos took place inside and the ceremony proceeded indoors as planned. If rain on your wedding day is good luck, then hail must be eternal luck.
The ceremony itself was a beautiful blend of tradition and timelessness, led by our very own wedding officiant, Reverend Maureen Jeffries, it was a reflection of Joy and Jake’s unwavering commitment to each other. Surrounded by their closest friends and family, they exchanged heartfelt vows, sealing their love with a kiss and cheer.
As the evening progressed, the atmosphere transformed into a lively celebration, filled with dancing, colorful uplighting, and even CO2 smoke cannons. Joy, true to her unique style, surprised her guests by changing into the classiest bridal sweatpant outfit, proving that elegance and comfort can indeed coexist. 😉
From Joy’s stunning Essense of Australia dress from Arlene’s Bridals to Jake’s custom suit from Jos. A. Bank, every detail was carefully chosen to reflect their personalities and love story. In fact, Jake’s custom palm tree lining was the perfect contrast to the hail storm and nod to the Key West honeymoon they were about to embark on after the wedding. The taupe colored bridesmaids’ dresses, sourced from Azazie, complemented the overall aesthetic, adding a touch of sophistication to the affair.
As the night drew to a close, Joy and Jake were surrounded by the warmth and support of their loved ones. Their April wedding at David’s Country Inn was a testament to the power of love, laughter, and the magic of new beginnings. And as they began the next chapter of their lives together, one thing was certain – their love would only continue to grow, just like the budding flowers of early Spring after a hailstorm.
