Steph asked me about doing a Spring portrait session for her and we chose Downtown Montclair, New Jersey. Steph and I go way back, we first met in college at Drew University and I was in awe of her majestic singing voice. We took a history of jazz class together and I worked with her a lot throughout her years doing theatre. I photographed headshots and production stills for the theatre department so we saw each other regularly. Our friend groups overlapped and I’ve just always admired her. A true definition of a “friend-crush,” Steph and I remained in contact over the years. When she asked me about re-doing some portraits for her, I was obviously very excited. The last time I photographed her was RIGHT after college. Needless to say we’ve grown up a bit, my photography skills have improved since college and I was looking forward to catching up & hanging out with her!!
Originally, Steph hails from New England, but is still currently living in NJ. We decided on downtown Montclair because it was halfway between the two of us and I love the variety and versatility of shooting there! Spring had just begun, so the yellow flowers were just starting to bloom on the bushes. There’s a church I love to use because it’s covered, in case of strong sunlight or even rain, and has impressive architecture. From there I like to stroll over to Church St. with its string lights and brick alleyways.
Steph is quite literally doing the most; teaching, working multiple jobs and going back to school. A master of all trades – she does it all; actor, singer, playwright AND educator. I can attest to her fantastic voice, and incredible ability to entertain. Additionally, she wanted to commemorate her 30th birthday for this shoot! I was overjoyed to help celebrate all she has grown to be and accomplished!
If you want to know more about Steph, check out her website. It was so awesome hanging with an old friend and making beautiful new portraits for her! (Although the beauty part she does all on her own).
